Writers on Writing

The Word Savvy Site As writers, we are wordsmiths: "Apprentices in a craft where no one ever becomes a master," as Hemingway put it. As practitioners of our craft, we constantly wrestle with word choice. "Which word is the right word?" and "Which word is the best word?" This site helps you answer those questions and gives you the opportunity to ask your own questions about word usage. Be sure to visit the "Bonuses" page to download free Word Savvy Tip Sheets designed to help you be a better writer.

Grammar Girl can help you solve just about any grammar puzzle you’re facing. And she does so in a fun, conversational style that makes grammar more entertainment than chore.

The Writable Life is for writers who want to be inspired, learn more about writing and the business of writing, and find ways to stay motivated. Written by a creative and business writing teacher and writer with over 15 years experience, the blog offers tips and advice for fiction, poetry, memoir, editing, and even a little business and freelance writing. We are just getting started, so join the conversation, pull up a chair, read a little, share a little, and come away refreshed and ready to write.

Writing Phrases Creative writing prompts mixed with ideas for characters and scenes so your descriptions will be stronger and more appealing.

Game On! Crafting Believeable Conflict that explores ways to create conflict for your characters beyond fight scenes and chases:

The Symbiosis Writing and Running "On this blog I will explore the vast landscape of ideas, experiences and emotions that exist between my running and my writing."

Prose and Verse World "Words ought to open windows and lift souls." Tom Mach's blog for writers of both prose and verse

I'm Larissa Hinton freshly graduated college student from Hampton University. I would like to welcome you to the craziness that is my blog. On this thing I'll be posting mostly about self-publishing, teaching and the writing process. I'll probably add some book reviews along the way, since I love to read. And write. And talk about things that have no substance whatsoever. So please feel free to lay back and relax and hopefully laugh at my blog, A Three Way Tie.

Judy Hedlund's blog. Do you have a dream of publication?

Then you’ve come to the right place! Jody has a heart for encouraging and teaching aspiring authors.

Jody’s Blog is a chronicle of her writing journey, her halting steps as she struggled up the path toward publication and beyond, as well as lots of writing advice.

Writer's Fun Zone is a service to as yet unpublished and published fiction and nonfiction authors to help make writing fun and adventurous.

After all, if writing weren't bringing us some kind of pleasure, why do it?

I know you may have bad days, when sitting down to write is the last thing you want to do, yet you've made a promise to yourself, your fans, your readership, your boss. So sit down you must.

How do I know that? Because I'm a writer, just like you. I'm also a teacher, and am called from deep within, to teach through writing. Beth Barany

Subplots By Grace The premise of my writing blog is to publish my short essays on life events, or "subplots" as I call them. One of my short stories was recently published in The Moment I Knew, women's anthology. My memoir manuscript is being considered by an Indie publisher. I also have a gardening blog to complement a newspaper garden column I've been running since 2003.

Twisted and Loving It a novelist's blog highlights the somewhat whimsical musings of author Candace L. Bowser. Candace is a writer for AKGmag where she was listed as one of the Top 20 Most Prolific Writers and is also a social media adviser for Off the Bookshelf. Her blog highlights some of the books she is working on as she struggles to find her way in the world as an Indie Author.

Sviatlana Piatakova is Belarusian writer who blogs on movies and popular music, writing and motherhood, feminism and celebrity culture, female chauvinism and female empowerment, dating, surviving in the city with a toddler in tow and good horror – on screen and in life.

In Best of Minsk Sviatlana Piatakova writes on places to eat in Minsk, both upscale and run-of-the-mill. Sviatlana always takes her daughter with her and writes from a perspective of a harried but happy single mother who just wants to be left alone, enjoying her food and her privacy. The site features bad photographs by Sviatlana and (hopefully) better posts about the menu, the service and the atmosphere of the places she visits.

Two-Fisted Blogger is where I spout off on many topics, but mostly pop culture--particularly film and fiction. And though I do mix it up occasionally, I focus mainly on "male-oriented" entertainment. In fiction, for example, that means action-adventure; military/paramilitary fiction; westerns; hard-boiled; classic sci-fi; heroic fantasy, etc. "Dude lit" is the phrase I've coined for the sort of fiction I myself write--"fiction for men" comprising those genres, and then some, but without the shoddy writing and obligatory exploitative elements that have helped give men's fiction such a bad rep. I hope to review as much dude-lit as I can find. For now I've been reviewing mostly traditionally published work by authors who have already made their mark. Eventually I'd like to plug new material by unknown/up-and-coming authors, whatever route they took to get into print. In addition to reviews, I sometimes blog about the publishing industry itself. I appreciate comments and do my best to answer them all promptly. Hank Brown
