Medical Thriller

When technology and morals conflict you have the setting for a medical thriller.

Rebirth

by Sandra Olson

What is the value of a human life? In our modern hospitals, the ethics of choosing who will live and who will die becomes a daily drama between patient, family and doctor.

If someone you loved was dying, and you had it within your power to save them, would you? Even if it meant someone innocent had to die to do it? That is the dilemma facing Dr. David Franklin. Elizabeth Franklin is dying of the same rare genetic brain disorder that killed her mother. He has the money and medical knowledge to obtain the stem cell tissues needed for the experimental surgery that could save her. But does he have the right, even if the embryos are created solely for that purpose?

When does the cost become too high?

The life of an innocent infant hangs in the balance, as one nurse struggles to prevent Dr. Franklin from killing her to save Elizabeth.

When experimentation becomes murder, how much are we willing to excuse?

Rebirth a medical thriller.

Reviews of book:

Rebirth is a gripping, thought-provoking novel. Once I started reading it, I could not put it down. The characters came to life in my imagination. The story line was fast-paced and intriguing, yet clear to follow. My heart rate increased the more involved I became in the plot. How could a caring, life-giving person cross the line into becoming a killer? Where does commitment become obsession? When does success become so invisible, that destruction becomes eminent? What is our moral responsibility when using the knowledge that is available today? These are questions I was left pondering after finishing the book, even though the story had a satisfying conclusion. I definitely found this a thrilling read. By Heather T.

Rebirth has a chilling realistic plot. I really enjoyed this medical thriller. With very little personal medical knowledge myself the author uses just enough description to inform but not overwhelm. I could visually see the actions taking place as I read each chapter. The storyline itself is chilling, and kept me wanting to try to guess where this author was taking me. This goes on right to the end of the novel. I enjoyed the characters, and their importance to this medical thriller. As with most novels one tries to connect with at least one individual, and I did rather quickly. I feel all who read this will enjoy it as I did. I am ready for the next novel to be realeased by this author...I could easily see this novel transform to a tv movie thriller! This is a must for everyones personal library. ENJOY ALL :) By Mary B.

About the author:

My name is Sandra Leigh Olson and I was born in 1950. The whole time I was growing up, I wanted to be a nurse. Born in Presque Isle, Maine, I grew up as a “military brat”, living all over the United States and in Europe. I didn’t finish nursing school until after my children were born. Since then I have worked as a Registered Nurse in several hospitals, taught in a Vocational Nursing School, and I spent a short time as a prison nurse at the Women’s Correctional Facility in Gatesville, Texas. I have worked in OB, Pediatrics, NICU, and Geriatrics. Most of these 25 years have been spent working with newborn babies, sometimes very sick ones. I can sympathize with anyone who wants to save the life of their child. Today the controversy over stem cell research and cloning is beginning to rage around the world, but we in the medical field have been intimately aware of these and other ethical issues for years...experimental treatment and surgeries, the right to die issues.

I have personally worked with parents whose children have benefited from organ transplants, as well as those who gave permission for organs to be donated.

While much good can come from some of these controversial medical procedures, we must decide if we have the right to kill unborn babies to obtain stem cells or to create clones when we have no idea the long term consequences of such actions. Is this medical knowledge from God or a violation of life? As medical science continues to learn and develop, more opportunities will present themselves that will be ethically challenging. I hope that we will be wise in our decision making.

I now live in Bentonville, AR, with my husband, Ron. I have three children and seven grandchildren. It never ceases to amaze me every time a baby is born. It is truly a miracle.
